Location: Multimedia Room
Misc: Lunch will be provided.

Sign-up for an opportunity to learn more about their standardized qCVR test or “Brain Stress Test”.

Overview
The current standard of practice for assessing patients with cerebrovascular steno-occlusive disease (SOD) is based on measuring resting blood flow metrics using MRI and CT perfusion imaging. However, the reliability of these methods decreases as the degree and number of stenoses increase.  The reason for this is that measures of adequate baseline blood flow in highly collateralized circulations do not account for a possible shortfall in recruitable blood flow due to a drop in supply or an increased metabolic demand. Visualization of the temporal filling patterns with angiography (DSA or CTA) may give some indication of the presence of collateral blood flow, but not its physiologic adequacy. Since the loss of hemodynamic reserve is the strongest known indicator of stroke risk, measurement of cerebrovascular reserve (CVR) offers a direct assessment of the impact of SOD on hemodynamic reserve.

In patients with coronary artery disease, the “Cardiac Stress Test” is the universal standard for assessing vascular reserve and risk of MI. Following 20 years of research, we have developed a standardized qCVR test or “Brain Stress Test” using a quantitative vasodilatory stimulus that is practical for clinical use. It is the culmination of testing in over 2000 patient studies with SOD.  The whole brain qCVR studies have provided key information for:

  • informing patient management
  • following the evolution of a known vascular lesions over time
  • determining the effectiveness of a therapeutic intervention.

Workshop Agenda:

  • What is a qCVR Test and why do I need it? Presentation by Dr. David Mikulis
  • Clinical Utility of the “qCVR Test”: Case Examples in Moya Moya and Pediatric Stroke
  • Conclusion
